Olivia Rodrigo spills her guts

Olivia Rodrigo has only grown since her debut album, currently sitting at over 53M monthly listeners on Spotify alone. This 21 year old has broken multiple records and won 3 Grammys throughout her career, today we will be reviewing her most recent album “GUTS.”

All-american b*tch

The album starts off with a punch, with lyrics like “Forgive and I forget / I know my age and I act like it / Got what you can't resist / I'm a perfect all-American bitch” it instantly became a standout track.

Bad idea right?

Perfectly capturing the confusion and excitement of making a bad decision. “Now I'm gettin' in the car, wreckin' all my plans / I know I should stop, but I can't / And I told my friends I was asleep / But I never said where or in whose sheets” The playful lyrics and upbeat tempo make it a fun listen.

Vampire

A powerful ballad that talks about being taken advantage of at a young age, shows off Rodrigo’s vocal range. The most descriptive being the second verse “And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news / You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called 'em crazy too

You're so convincing / How do you lie without flinching? (How do you lie? How do you lie? How do you lie?) / Oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked up little thrill / Can't figure out just how you do it and God knows I never will / Went for me and not her / 'Cause girls your age know better” These haunting lyrics are vulnerable, allowing fans to personally connect with the track.

Lacy

Similar to “jealousy, jealousy” on her debut album, this is another song about envy. “Smart, sexy Lacy, I'm losin’ it lately / I feel your compliments likе bullets on skin / Dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnatе / Well, aren't you the greatest thing to ever exist?” The soft instrumentals and introspective lyrics make it a fan favorite.

Ballad of a homeschooled girl

Next we jump into a more reflective track, speaking on struggling with socializing and fitting in with your peers. “I broke a glass, tripped and fell / Told secrets I shouldn't tell / Stumbled over all my words / Made it weird, then made it worse” The lyrics are relatable to anyone who’s ever felt like the odd one out and proves that even stars like Rodrigo, share the same struggles as we do.

Making the bed

This track is one of the most personal tracks on the album, describing Rodrigo’s conflict in wanting to blame external factors while also knowing she made the bed and she has to lie in it. “Well, sometimes I feel like I don't wanna be where I am / Gettin' drunk at a club with my fair-weather friends / Push away all the people who know me the best / But it's me who's been makin' the bed” The melody is soothing and the lyrics pack a punch making it a song that listeners often find themselves coming back to.

Logical

Describing the overwhelming decision of going with your heart or mind, logical reflects upon a past relationship and the things that were overlooked. “'Cause loving you is loving every / Argument you held over my head / Brought up the girls you could have instead / Said I was too young, I was too soft / Can't take a joke, can't get you off / Oh, why do I do this?” gives listeners an inside look at what Rodrigo was facing in her last relationship.

Get him back!

An empowering breakup anthem about reclaiming yourself after a breakup quickly became a fan favorite. “Because everyone knew all of the shit that he'd do / He said I was the only girl, but that just wasn't the truth / And when I told him how he hurt me, he'd tell me I was trippin' / But I am my father's daughter, so maybe I could fix him” The upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it a radio hit.

Love is embarrassing

A light hearted song that pokes fun at the awkwardness of looking back on a past relationship. “And I consoled you while you cried / Over your ex-girlfriend's new guy / My God, how could I be so stupid? / You found a new version of me / And I damn near startеd World War III / Jesus, what was I even doin'?” It’s a fun addition to the album, adding a more upbeat tone.

The grudge

A personal and intense track that delves into resentment and forgiveness. “Yeah, I'm so tough when I'm alone, and I make you feel so guilty / And I fantasize about a time you're a little fuckin' sorry / And I try to understand why you would do this all to me / You must be insecure, you must be so unhappy” These powerful lyrics and emotional delivery make it a standout melody.

Pretty isn’t pretty

Addressing unrealistic beauty standards, allowing listeners to feel seen. “You can win the battle, but you'll never win the war / You fix thе things you hated, and you'd still feel so insecure

And I try to ignorе it, but it's everythin' I see / It's on the poster on the wall, it's in the shitty magazines / It's in my phone, it's in my head, it's in the boys I bring to bed / It's all around, it's all the time, I don't know why I even try” Vulnerable lyrics and stripped production allow for listeners to truly focus on the lyrics.

Teenage Dream

The closing track reflects on the bittersweet nature of growing up and facing overwhelming expectations. “I'll blow out the candles, happy birthday to me / Got your whole life ahead of you, you're only nineteen / But I fear that they already got all the best parts of me / And I'm sorry that I couldn't always be your teenage dream” The song overall has a very nostalgic feel, encouraging listeners to look back on their life.
